ABOUT THE AREA

The area we know as Flamingo was given its name by the Tequesta Indians who were the first settlers in 1892. The Tequesta Indians had to name their new post office and they gave it the name Flamingo after the most rare bird seen in the area. The Everglades National Park was established in 1947 to help protect the fragile ecosystem. Everglades National Park is the 3rd largest park in the United States. It is the largest tropical wilderness of any kind east of the Mississippi river it contains that larges mangrove ecosystem in the western hemisphere. Everglades National Park covers over 1.5 million acres throughout Dade, Monroe, and Collier counties in Florida. The largest body of water within the park is Florida Bay, which extends to the Florida Keys spreading out over 800 square miles. This body of water is home to a variety fish species that are highly sought after by anglers every day. The body of water contains miles of grass and muddy flats where one can go target species such as the Snook, Redfish, Tarpon, Trout, and Snapper to name a few. Being such a tropical place it allows for many anglers and fish to stay in the bay year round and not moved due to climate changes. It is an extremely diverse ecosystem that has many different birds and reptiles. One of the only places I have been to that you can see the American Alligator and Saltwater Crocodile in the same habitat. This area is so diverse and is always changing so every day is a learning day and it would be my pleasure to take you out and show you what the glades has to offer and learn new things about the Park!
