South Florida Fishing Charter Report: Tarpon Migration Heating Up in Everglades, Islamorada, and Biscayne Bay

3/5/2025

Season is getting busier and busier! Fishing is gradually getting hotter and hotter!
Right now this time of year the we are finishing up little spurts  of cold fronts in south Florida! These cold fronts help sometimes stall the tarpon migration so they group up thicker in Everglades National park! Helps keep the bait run going!

EVERGLADES NATIONAL PARK FISHING CHARTERS
Last few trips the weather has been great with occasional day of more wind then normal which isn’t a problem! Early morning and mid day have been spectacular for Tarpon fishing. We set out early in morning and if water temps are cooler then we target snook and redfish on the flats or in and around the mangroves. Then once that water temp reaches the right temp it’s time to switch gears and go chase the silver! The trout bite in flamingo has been spectacular usually the by catch while fishing for tarpon! The snook bite continue to be steady and tides are starting to fill in more so making sight fishing better and better!

ISLAMORADA FISHING CHARTERS
With islamorada being close to Everglades national park that makes it easier to chase bonefish and shoot over to chase snook redfish and tarpon. This past week we had some nice days where we were able to sight fish those early migration tarpon on the bay! Once the wind picked up it made it harder to sight fish then and that’s when we transition to running the extra 15 mins to chase tarpon on the flamingo side of the bay!

However bonefishing has been amazing! Smaller fish but schooled up and hungry especially on the right tide! Whether we are throwing fly or tossing jig at them we have had multiple  fish days! We have came across a few permit doing there thing in the deeper water  but as the water temps rise these fish will be happy and showing up more on the flat!

BISCAYNE BAY FISHING CHARTERS
Biscayne bay is an interesting place offering bonefish and permit with juvenile tarpon around! However when the migration starts to happen this will be a great place to put  it all together! Bone fishing  has  been spectacular in Biscayne bay! The bay seems to be holding bigger bonefish then the upper middle keys. But they can be tricky at times! But the permit love the flats here with the water flow and the reef and wrecks not being far allows them to come in and feed and jump right back out to the wrecks.

Although we offer fishing in Everglades national park, Biscayne bay and islamorada. We also do trips to chase peacock bass and large mouth bass in fly and spin! The bite has been great for peacocks! This week Austin had a group chasing peacocks. They did great with largemouth and catching so decent size peacocks!

As the weather starts to normalize and the water temps get back to regular fishing will get better and better!

Everglades National Park & Biscayne Bay Fishing Report: Early Spring 2025 From Captain Austin Abercrombie

Following one of South Florida's most notable winter seasons, the pristine waters of Everglades National Park are delivering exceptional fishing opportunities, particularly for trophy snook. These legendary gamefish are congregating in significant numbers around river mouths, mangrove shorelines, and hidden backcountry creeks, providing anglers with memorable sight-fishing opportunities.

The crystalline waters of Biscayne Bay are currently showcasing why this region remains a premier destination for shallow water sight-fishing. Permit fishing has been nothing short of spectacular, with schools of these elusive gamefish actively feeding on crabs across the flats. Bonefish continue their year-round presence, offering anglers consistent opportunities for pursuing these ghostly speedsters in gin-clear water.

As water temperatures gradually climb, we're witnessing increased redfish activity throughout the park's vast ecosystem. These copper-colored beauties are becoming more aggressive, tailing in shallow water and cruising mangrove shorelines. While we await the primary tarpon migration, juvenile tarpon are providing excellent action in the backcountry, especially during the warmer afternoon hours.

Current conditions have been favorable for fly anglers, with relatively calm morning winds. However, as we progress into March, anticipate more challenging conditions with average winds of 15 knots. These conditions, while demanding, often concentrate fish in protected areas and can actually improve sight-fishing opportunities for skilled anglers.

The upcoming months promise some of the year's most exciting fishing. We're approaching prime time for the legendary tarpon migration, where silver kings from 60 to 150+ pounds will begin their annual journey through our waters. This period also typically brings some of our best permit fishing opportunities in Biscayne Bay.

Whether you're seeking your first bonefish on fly, hoping to scratch permit off your bucket list, or dreaming of battling a trophy snook, now is an excellent time to experience the world-class fishing of Everglades National Park and Biscayne Bay. Contact Captain Austin Abercrombie to reserve your date during this prime fishing season. From technical poling skiff trips for fly anglers to light tackle adventures for families, we customize each charter to create unforgettable fishing memories.

Hell'S Bay Owners tournament!

4/13/2019

This past weekend was the Annual Hell's Bay Owners fishing tournament and get together out of Islamorada, Florida. It is always a great event to get everyone together to have drinks and share fish stories and also do a little competitive fishing as well! As usual when you say tournament its like the wind hears you and decides to blow. But that did not stop my recent Hells Bay owners from catching fish! They stuck it out, catching over 30 reds and 20 snook. We saw tarpon and bonefish but they just were not happily eating. We set out from Anglers House Marina and head out to catch the Redfish and Snook in the glades so we could target the other species near mainland when wind calmed down. Man it was pretty intense making it across Florida Bay to the coast! We started catching fish as soon as the first line was thrown! We continued to fish the areas until we though we had enough to go after other species! We got back to mainland area and hit a few flats that hold fish and we saw a bonefish but just spooked fast! It was a great tournament! At the end of the day we all were having dinner as the awards started and it turned out the my man Luke won Top Junior Angler of the event! He was stoked! I knew we caught an abundant amount of fish and had a good chance of winning something and we did! Great first event dude!

It was a Great two days of fishing with father/son duo Greg and Jacob! Flew on a red eye straight to the Glades to do a little fishing! Before the the trip they both mentioned that catching quantity and variety of fish was the game plan! They did just that! We lost count of the number of redfish and snook we hooked up with! I couldnt keep up baiting hooks fast enough as fish were coming in the boat! They caught Redfish, Snook, Black drum, sheepshead, tarpon, jacks, snapper, and the rare ladyfish! Had a Blast showing them what early spring time fishing in the glades is all about! Jacob mention when he finishes school he wants to move to the glades in south florida and fish everyday! Look forward to fishing these two again in the future! Here are a few photos from out adventure in  the glades!

Hurricane=Hungry Fish

10/9/2018

Hey there anglers!

With the Hurricane upon us the fishing will continue to be great and it should help set off the bait run a little more! Fishing in the backcountry has been phenomenal for fly fishing and baitfishing! Few of the big tarpon are around so if your patient enough and wanna wait a catch one there are opportunities! Snook and Redfishing all up and down the coast has been solid. The fish super happy and ready to eat what ever swims there way! It is going to be a great season for us here in Evergladrd National Park! So the back country fish are hungry and waiting.
On the offhsore side of things the sailfish are starting to show up more and more each day! With the wind supposed to be out of the west with this storm then the water will be great not to rough. Lets get you out there and on the water to make memories!

Fishing Heating up!

10/3/2018

Its that time of the year! Temperatures will start to decrease as the fishing starts to increase! The bait run is starting to happen! Starting with the little baitfish pushing down the coast! The bigger bait will be arriving shortly as well! But the fishing currently is on fire! Multiple snook redfish and tarpon days! This is my favorite  time of year by far! Tends to be tidal so its easier to work with starting times just so we can fish the certain areas and have great days! Tarpon are still around if you are seeking to catch one on fly or spinning tackle! It just comes down to the presentation of the bait! Watch out for the photos and more reports in the coming week!

The "No School" has come to an end but the fishing is still going strong! It has been a very productive summer and it is currently looking like the Fall will be just as good or better! We have been catching tons of Snook, Redfish, and black drum! But the Silver King is still hanging around and showing off! Few of the resident Tarpon have been very happy in the Back Country and have been super hungry! Fishing is stronger everyday! So give me a call and lets get you out on the water!

But not only have all fo the guides/captains been busy catching fish and making memories for clients. We have at the same time been fighting to protect these waters and the waters surrounding the Everglades. Huge thanks goes out to Captains For Clean Water and the captains helping them fight! We have made progress but still need to keep it going so our future generation will be able to enjoy fishing these waters!

Look into Captains for Clean Water and help us raise money! When you sign up, donate or buy products from captains for clean water I will give a $50.00 discount on the next charter!

Please sign up and help!

In other news, last month was our 3rd annual Project Healing  Waters event! Where for two days a few of the local guides and businesses support wounded veterans by taking them out on the water in the Everglades! For some of the men and women it is their first time experiencing this amazing place! Gives them the opportunity to enjoy a place that they all fought so hard for us to be able to fish on a daily basis! Look forward to next year! If youd like to help out next event reach out to me and I will get you involved!

Stay tune for pictures and videos!
